So, you think you have your healthful habits in check at home and then the inevitable happens: You have to go to work.
If you’re not fortunate enough to be able to work from home – talk to us if that’s something you’re interested in doing 😉 – the workplace can be a very difficult place to maintain good habits. It seems there always is some kind of celebration going on with tasty yet sugary sweets … a holiday, a birthday, a Friday. Food is one way to bring employees together for social time and camaraderie.
Worksite Wellness Tips
How can you survive these traps and make a difference in worksite wellness? Here are some tips for starting that conversation with your employer.
- WELLNESS COMMITTEE. If you don’t have a wellness committee at your workplace, start one. This committee can be in charge of integrating healthful habits to everyday work life and make suggestions to management for change. Make sure the people on the committee have the employees’ best interest at heart and are willing to put in the time to propose ideas to those in charge. It helps to get your worksite’s human resources manager involved if you want your ideas to eventually develop into policy changes.
- WELLNESS INCENTIVES. Once you have a committee in place, it’s good to develop worksite wellness policies. These could revolve around healthy eating, increasing physical activity or even helping employees kick nasty habits like smoking. Some examples include something as simple as offering fruit-infused water in the breakroom, organizing a walking group during lunch or challenging employees through health tracking apps or FitBits. Once you establish simple incentives, you can move on to more complicated ones like worksite gardens and insurance discounts or extra vacation or sick time for healthy behaviors.
